Strata Marcella to Llanllugan

Walk along the Montgomeryshire canal into Welshpool. A small diversion here allows you to visit Powys Castle (the opulent stately home of the Clive family) and Dolforwyn, a much more austere castle built by the Welsh princes.

A restored light railway runs from Welshpool to Llanfair Caereinion, or you could walk along tracks and side roads through the woods. Llanfair has shops, pubs and a holy well near the church. Walk south over the hills to Llanllugan, where the Cistercian nuns’ church is now a parish church. It has some spectacular stained glass - and some intriguing puzzles for the history detective. What are the stones sticking out of the north wall?
