From the abbey, a footpath leads along the River Dee to Llangollen, home of the famous International Eisteddfod. Climb the hills south of Llangollen and follow the Ceiriog Way to Rhydycroesau and the Offa’s Dyke Path. Follow the line of the Dyke to Llanymynech Hill, where it runs through an Iron Age fort and some old lead workings.
From Llanymynech you can follow the towpath of the Montgomeryshire Canal to Strata Marcella. About a mile past Pool Quay, where the canal runs close to the A483, a swing bridge crosses it. Walk down to the road and cross it carefully, then go through the gate on the other side. All that remains of Strata Marcella is spread out before you, hidden under the turf. It is on private land but the best view is in any case from the bank above it.
