This section of the route includes the ruins of the eighteenth-century Neath Abbey ironworks, several prehistoric sites and some wonderful medieval churches, and ends at the modern Cistercian abbey on Caldey Island.
Walk up the little river Clydach and over to Pontardawe, then past the Bronze Age cairn at Carn Lechart and the medieval castle at Penlle’rcastell to Ammanford. An old railway line takes you to the the prehistoric settlement at Mynydd Llangyndeyrn. From here you can walk to Carmarthen and through the rolling Carmarthenshire countryside (past two old pilgrim churches on the Cowyn estuary) to St Clears. Footpaths and side roads lead you through pretty villages with medieval churches to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Saundersfoot and Tenby. From here, a regular ferry runs to Caldey.
We are working on an alternative route from Ferryside across the Tawe estuary to Llansteffan, when the ferry is running again.
