Red Kites

On the way from Llanddewi-brefi to Tregaron the Cistercian Way uses part of Tregaron’s Red Kite Trail, a waymarked path through some of the best kite-spotting country.

Kites are about the size of buzzards and have a similar mewing cry but can easily be distinguished by their long forked tails. These magnificent predators were for a long time regarded as vermin and were hunted virtually to extinction by farmers and gamekeepers. Only a small number survived in the remote hills of eastern Ceredigion. Over the last twenty years, though, numbers have begun to increase. In a remarkable partnership with local farmers, conservationists have been able to protect the birds and even set up feeding stations to attract them back to the area. As a result, walkers over the hills east of Tregaron can sometimes see ten or more of these spectacular birds wheeling and stooping above them: an awesome experience.
